Freezing a copper or steel pipe to replace a leaking valve is a common method to avoid draining the entire plumbing system. It involves creating an ice plug within the pipe to temporarily stop water flow, allowing for valve, fitting or leak to be repaired or replacement. This technique is often used for situations where draining the system is impractical or undesirable, such as when it would cause significant disruption or require refilling with inhibitor.

KCC will identify the section of pipe where the valve needs to be replaced. Ensure the water supply to that section is shut off, and the pipe is relatively clear of water flow.

We use a pipe freezing kit, which typically includes specialized jackets and a refrigerant (like CO2).

The refrigerant will cause the water to freeze, forming an ice plug that acts as a temporary barrier.

With the ice plug in place, the bad valve, fitting or leak can be safely removed and replaced or repaired

Once we have the new valve, fitting is installed or the leak repaired, the ice plug will gradually thaw, and the water flow will resume
